Monte and his bandmates are incredible musicians, this CD is outstanding, but go see a live show, you'll be amazed.
Plain and simple. Then I bought "Mirror" and watched YouTube videos and. he was the one who told me to get some Monte. Too bad he won't be in Denver any time soon.My favorite number of his is still "When Will I," but I bought this album for a now-close-second favorite: "Could Have Loved You Forever." I watched a video of him and his band doing a live take of this in the studio and was awe-struck.
I waited for at least a year. Well, my "Monte Montgomery story" is pretty simple: My friend, who has no idea what it means to be a good musician, what good music is, any of that. He's soooooo unbelievably talented and sooooo humble and soooo original. The way they enter with the drums and bass is frickin' phenomenal. If you've ever been recommended to hear Monte, just sit down, shut up, and and listen. oh snap.
He's got emotions and he's got a way to put them out there for people to relate to. He's in my Top 5, and he ought to be in yours. Kinda shameful. Also on this album, "River" (the opener), "Let's Go," and "Moonlight Tango" all have nice Monte kick to them. I had the epiphany. This man is an absolute show stealer.
If I was a headlining show and he opened for me, I wouldn't play; I'd be to embarrassed. And, of course, "Little Wing" is a display of raw talent. (Cue the "High Fidelity" fans and haters).
The last few he's released haven't been as good as I'd expected. Monte is one of the most talented guitarists/songwriters of our time. This is definately his strongest album. This one is a must own. Killer guitar tone (as always) and fantastic vocals.
Picked up this CD and am happily enjoying it today. Went to my first Monte show last night in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Simply the best guitarist I've ever seen, hands down and I've been to probably close to 1,000 concerts over the years, and a nice guy on top of it. Really captures the essence of his playing. ENJOY.
It comes off more calamitous than pure. Let's Go - This song is performed as a powerhouse on "At Workplay" which is my preferred version to this more acoustic arrangement.3. The influences I hear on this CD are Derek and the Dominoes and Daryl Hall but make no mistake, this is quintessential Monte. Leave it to Monte to come up with great metaphors.11.
River - Great way to start. So, Let's Go:1. Love the syncopation and melody.4. Can't Fool Everyone - A tune that barrels forward like an out of control locomotive.
Could've Loved You Forever - Great melody and lyrics without falling into sappiness.9. Everything About You - Playful and romantic, this tune is "radio ready" as it gets into your head. Company You Keep - Great lyrics and a really charging tune.5. Love's Last Holiday - This is gooood. Monte is the perfect balance of rough and rowdy yet tender and insightful.
Memorable guitar licks. 8. Be Still - Good song and enjoy the more subtle "torquing" of Monte's voice that is his signature.10 and 12. How Far and Midlife Matinee - Two very well written and performed songs. Moonlight Tango - This should have been a hit the moment it aired. A rumbling tune showcasing his guitar prowess.2. Little Wing - A classic, of course.
Monte at his woeful best.6. This song just makes you want to get up and starting dancing - with someone.7. This is not my preferred arrangement. Why he doesn't have a wider audience boggles the mind.
